Types of Pain and Problems

Myofascial Pain/Fibromyalgia

This is a chronic pain syndrome that involves the muscles and soft tissues in the face. Patients can have symptoms of trigger points and taut bands in the facial region. Trigger points are sites where muscles or tendons produce pain when pressed on. They can produce pain locally, at the site of where being pressed, or at a distant point of that muscle. Taut bands are when a patient’s face is pressed on during examination and the area of muscle feels tight and band-like. Stretching these muscles may also produce pain. These muscle pains in the face often worsen or persist with time. There are many possible treatments for myofascial pain including lidocaine injection or dry-needling of trigger points, stretching, spray and stretch, massage, heat/cold therapy, TENS unit, balneotherapy, acupressure, biofeedback, etc.
